5marmot windshirtJan 04, 2009

This jacket has a minimalist design which is perfect for layering. I used a combination of this marmot windshirt, long sleeve shirt, and an under armour base layer during a recent snowshoeing trip; I was able to stay warm/hot throughout the entire trip. There is one pocket and it is located on the chest; it is just big enough to carry some chap stick or in my case an inhaler. I would recommend this product to be used in similar situations and layering configurations.

This is the number one piece of clothing I own. Period.

I've had mine since 2005, and it is still going strong after 6 years, and many many washes.

Basically, it is the ultimate and complete replacement for most fleece jackets as a base layer (and I've been through dozens).

I find that it is warmer to wear, even though it is thinner and lighter than most fleece. Like all other jackets, this is due to the warm air that is being trapped between your skin and the super-thin and luxuriously soft and proprietary driclime inner liner, yet this warm air cannot escape easily beyond the thin nylon outer shell. Conversely, the nylon shell acts as the windbreak -- hence the "windshirt" name for this jacket.

It's like 15+ years ago, Marmot had found the winning combination of a warm, but thin "fleecy like" material on the inside, and a light-weight thin nylon wind-shell on the outside, and run with it.

Marmot claims that driclime acts as a wicking material, to help manage perspiration. I find that for the most part, it does sort of work. For example -- if you are really exerting yourself (like cutting up firewood with a chainsaw...), it does do a fair amount of wicking, but not 100%. So I would still want to throw the jacket into the wash before continuing to wear it the next day golfing with the guys...

What I really like about this base layer is that I never over-heat in it, like I have in the past with fleece.

The armpits are meshed so there is good ventilation. The shell can take a light drizzle and dries out quickly (<30 minutes). You could treat it with a water repellent wash, but I never have.

These jackets are a minimalist design. All versions I've seen of this jacket have only 1 generous mid-sized zippered pocket. For men, it's usually the left chest pocket. Some 2010/11 versions are now adding a hood variation to the jacket/windshirt, made out of just the shell material. Marmot has tweaked and varied the nylon shell material over the years, but the driclime inner liner has stayed the same.

I personally like and own the "classic" version, which is also still being made. It is usually $10-$20 cheaper than any new variations of the jacket that Marmot markets.

The cut is generous but not baggy, and has a nice high collar, with a slightly longer back/coat-tail.

In terms of climate, I live near Toronto, Canada, and I use this jacket as the base layer of a 2, or sometimes 3 layer "winter jacket system" (3 layers when it drops below -10C/14F). During the rest of the year, it works on it's own for most of the spring and fall seasons.

I just wish these jackets/windshirts came in kids' sizes. I would get them for my 2 kids in a heartbeat.
