2ZIPPER BROKE AFTER 2ND WEARINGJan 25, 2010
By Patti
I bought this jacket for my 4 year old's first ski trip. Got it quickly, it fit great (she's big for her age and normally wears a size 5 - we bought the 6-6x to get 2 years out of it. The styling is great. Our issue is she wore this jacket to school twice and as a 4 year old will do, she got the zipper jammed and undoing it broke teeth in the molded plastic zipper (the teeth literally could be plucked out, they were that cheap). It's hard to understand why a great sportswear company like Columbia would put in bad Zippers when LL Bean and Lands End use YKK zipper exclusively. I called Columbia and they admitted getting zipper complaints that they would pass along to the designers, but I was not offered any coupon, rebate, etc. I've ordered a YKK zipper that I'll sew in myself, but still it's an added $20 as well as headache time. If the ski trip wasn't in 3 days, I would send the coat back. Columbia will not get my business until they start using higher quality zippers like their competition does.

3Poor quality zipper for a childJan 16, 2012

I have purchased many Columbia coats in the last 15 or more years for our 4 children. I thought the price on this particular one was reasonable. I did read a poor review in regards to the zipper. I fully agree. The cheap, flimsy plastic zipper is no match for any child. The zipper broke after less than 5 times on our child. Years ago we could pass a jacket down to another child or two and the metal zipper held strong. We did have one break years ago and Columbia fully replaced it with a perfectly matched zipper for the coat. I was happy that our current jacket was fully replaced quickly. I can't say I would ever buy another Columbia coat unless they made drastic changes to the quality of the zipper.
